These natural forces have driven the conductor of the first lunch concert of the year, Ville Vannemaa, to choose music compatible to the harsh conditions of northern winter: biting frosts, endless darkness and sparkling northern lights. Nordic jazz, as well as the Nordic in general, has lately attracted more and more attention all over the world. In the strictest sense of the concept, Nordic jazz is a style of music played by Nordic musicians. The austere climate is etched on the melody and harmony of the Nordic jazz.
In the Northern Lights lunch concert the audience will hear how the northern lights, freezing temperatures and darkness sound like.
The conductor of the concert is Ville Vannemaa.
The concert is played at Savoy Theatre at 12–1 p.m. and is free of charge. It is possible to book a ticket for free from the outlets of City of Helsinki Cultural office (Savoy Theatre, Vuotalo, Malmitalo, Stoa or Kanneltalo) or for a fee of €1 from Lippupiste.

Tammikuu on paitsi pimeä myös tilastollisesti vuoden kylmin kuukausi. Tästä inspiroituneena kapellimestari Ville Vannemaa on valinnut vuoden ensimmäiseen lounaskonserttiin ohjelmiston, joka heijastelee Pohjolan ankaraa talvea: viiltävää pakkasta, loputonta pimeyttä ja räiskyviä revontulia. Northern Lights -konsertissa pohjoisen ankara talvi saa musiikillisen muodon UMOn esittäessä pohjoismaista jazzia.
Kuten revontulet, myös pohjoismainen jazz näyttäytyy erilaisena säveltäjästä riippuen. Konsertissa kuullaan sävellyksiä muun muassa Palle Mikkelborgilta, Jarmo Savolaiselta, Jan Allanilta ja Kari Kompalta. Solistivetoisissa kappaleissa UMOn virtuoosiset soittajat saavat runsaasti soolotilaa.
Pohjoismainen jazz ­– kuten pohjoismaisuus muutenkin ­– on viime vuosina ollut maailmalla mukavassa nosteessa. Kaikessa yksinkertaisuudessa Nordic jazz -tyylisuunnan voi määrittää pohjoismaisten muusikoiden esittämäksi jazziksi, johon pohjoisen karu ilmasto on jättänyt jälkensä. Mutta miltä revontulet, pakkanen ja pimeys kuulostavat? Tämä selviää Northern Lights -lounaskonsertissa.
