The long and colourful career of Jamaican Ernest Ranglin is like no other: Ranglin got started with the early ska, calypso, reggae and dub bands of the 1950s and 60s and was involved in creating the soundscapes of those new and developing styles. Mixing virtuoso jazz guitar playing with a reggae beat, Ranglin has worked with practically all Jamaican music greats from Bob Marley and the Wailers to Jimmy Cliff and Lee “Scratch” Perry.
The farewell tour of 83-year-old Ranglin comes to Huvila Festival Tent with a true world music super band. Senegalese singer Cheikh Lô is one of the biggest names in West African music, and his unique voice has been charming audiences since the 1990s. Playing the drums is afrobeat icon Tony Allen, known for his work with Fela Kuti. Representing traditional jazz in the line-up are bass player Ira Coleman, who has worked with, for example, Herbie Hancock and Sting, and pianist Alex Wilson, a hot name in Latin jazz. Jamaikalaisen Ernest Ranglinin pitkä ja vivahteikas ura hakee vertaistaan: Ranglin vaikutti jo 1950- ja 60-luvuilla varhaisissa ska-, calypso-, reggae- ja dub-bändeissä ja oli mukana luomassa uusien ja kehittyvien tyylien soundimaailmoja. Ranglin on tehnyt yhteistyötä liki kaikkien Jamaikan suuruuksien kanssa Bob Marleysta ja The Wailersistä Jimmy Cliffiin ja Lee ”Scratch” Perryyn. Siinä sivussa Ranglin muun muassa teki musiikkia ensimmäiseen James Bond -elokuvaan Dr. No ja sovitti kansainväliseksi jättihitiksi muodostuneen Millie Smallin My Boy Lollipopin. Ranglinin ominta soundia edustavat kuitenkin kymmenet levyt, joilla hän yhdistelee virtuoosimaista jazz-kitarismia reggae-poljentoon.
83-vuotiaan Ranglinin jäähyväiskiertue saapuu Huvilaan todellisen maailmanmusiikin superbändin kanssa. Senegalilainen laulajaCheikh Lô on länsiafrikkalaisen musiikin suurimpia nimiä, jonka ainutlaatuinen ääni on hurmannut yleisöjä 1990-luvulta saakka. Rummuissa on afrobeat-ikoni Tony Allen, Fela Kutin tunnettu aisapari. Perinteistä jazzia kokoonpanoon tuovat basisti Ira Coleman, joka muistetaan työstään esimerkiksi Herbie Hancockin ja Stingin kanssa, sekä pianisti Alex Wilson, lattarijazzin kuuma nimi. Saksofonissa kuullaan porukan nuorinta muusikkosuuruutta, brittiläistä Soweto Kinchiä.
Eturivin suomalaisiin jazzkitaristeihin lukeutuva Kalle Kalima on imenyt oppia mm. Raoul Björkenheimilta ja John Schröderiltä. Long Winding Road -yhtyeineen Kalima löytöretkeilee free jazzista western-sävelten maailmaan.
